How to Unmerge Cells in Excel: A Step-by-Step Guide

Merging cells in Excel is a quick way to create visually appealing spreadsheets. By merging cells, you can combine information from several cells into one cell. For example, you may want to merge a row of cells containing first and last names into a single cell with a full name. However, when you no longer need the information in a merged cell, you can unmerge the cells to return them to their previous state. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to unmerge cells in Excel.

Step 1: Open Your Excel Spreadsheet

Open the Excel spreadsheet containing the merged cells that you want to unmerge. If you don't have an existing spreadsheet, create a new one by opening Excel, clicking the "File" tab, and then selecting "New" and "Blank Workbook."

Step 2: Select the Merged Cells

Click on the merged cell to select it. If the merged cell is part of a larger selection of cells, click and drag your mouse to select multiple cells. To select an entire column or row, click the column or row letter at the top or left side of the spreadsheet.

Step 3: Unmerge the Cells

With the cells selected, click the "Home" tab. Then, click the "Merge & Center" button in the "Alignment" group. This action will unmerge the cells and return them to their previous state.

Step 4: Save Your Spreadsheet

Once you have unmerged the cells, save your spreadsheet. Click the "File" tab and then click "Save" or "Save As."

Tips for Unmerging Cells in Excel:

Tip 1: Use the "Undo" Feature

If you accidentally unmerge cells, you can use the "Undo" feature to reverse your changes. Click the "Home" tab and then click the "Undo" button in the "Editing" group. Alternatively, press "Ctrl+Z" on your keyboard.

Tip 2: Use the "Redo" Feature

If you use the "Undo" feature to reverse your changes but then decide to unmerge the cells again, use the "Redo" feature. Click the "Home" tab and then click the "Redo" button in the "Editing" group. Alternatively, press "Ctrl+Y" on your keyboard.

Tip 3: Merge Cells Again

If you want to merge cells again after unmerging them, select the cells to merge and click the "Merge & Center" button. The cells will be merged, and the information in them will be combined into one cell.
